Language, Culture, and Community

Gould is a dynamic global community, from the comfort of Maine’s mountains.

The English Studies Program (ESP) supports students who are new to English-language learning as they fully engage in Gould’s academic and community life. Designed for non-native speakers, the program helps students develop their skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening while building confidence and fluency in a new environment. Students are placed in appropriate ESP courses based on assessments and language readiness, with small classes that allow for individual attention and support.

Academic learning is balanced with immersive language practice through mainstream classes, writing support, and evening study sessions in the ESP Study Hall and the Gould Writing Center. Students also have access to an official TOEFL lab right on campus, allowing them to practice and complete the exam in a familiar setting. At Gould, they gain the tools and confidence to succeed in college-preparatory coursework.

International students at Gould are more than participants—they’re central to our community. Through the Global Student Organization (GSO), international and domestic students come together for cultural exchange, food, and friendship. The GSO hosts events like the International Festival and Lunar New Year celebration, where students share traditions, stories, and dishes from their home countries with the entire school.

Evening Academic Support

During evening study halls, international students have access to layered academic support designed to help them thrive. The ESP Study Hall reinforces the reading, writing, and language skills students develop during the academic day, while the Writing Center and Math Help Center offer peer and faculty support across various disciplines. These welcoming spaces make it easy for students to ask questions, prepare for class, and build confidence in their academic English.

Global Insights: World Literature & Composition

Through literature by diverse global authors, students build analytical and communication skills in English. The course parallels mainstream literature offerings while providing extra support in language fluency and academic writing.

International Student Orientation

Before the school year begins, international students participate in a special orientation designed to ease their transition to life at Gould. Over several days, they get to know the campus, the town of Bethel, and each other, while adjusting to jetlag and new routines. The program offers a warm welcome, helping students settle in, ask questions, and feel a sense of belonging from the very beginning.
