Experiential Learning

Real-World Practice
At Gould, active, hands-on learning shapes students into creative thinkers and problem-solvers who grow in unexpected ways.
Our Signature Four Point Program is anchored in experiential learning at every stage. Ninth graders become world travelers—not tourists—immersing themselves in new cultures through environmental conservation in Costa Rica, historical exploration in Spain, sea kayaking adventures in Dominica, or connecting with indigenous communities in Tanzania. Tenth graders discover new methods for self-expression through robust workshops led by visiting artists and make meaningful local impacts through service projects. Junior year brings an unforgettable eight-night winter expedition into Maine’s Western Mountains and White Mountain National Forest, while seniors undertake self-directed capstone projects that let them explore their passions on a deeper level.

Experiential learning at Gould means students learn by doing—immersing themselves in real-world adventures, meaningful projects, and global connections that shape their growth.

The IDEAS Center
Experiential learning at Gould goes beyond Four Point. In the Marlon Family IDEAS (Innovation, Design Thinking, Entrepreneurship, Arts, and Science) Center, our students become doers, creators, and makers, tackling projects from robotics and renewable energy to designing and handbuilding their own skis and snowboards.
Classes frequently step outside traditional classroom walls to embrace hands-on learning because we believe the best way to learn is by doing.
Becoming World Travelers
Travel opportunities span continents, from semesters abroad in Spain or France, conservation trips protecting sea turtles in Costa Rica, to Alpine ski training in Austria and the French Alps. Gould students find outlets for their passions, developing into independent thinkers ready to shape their own paths in the world.
EXPERIENTIAL Highlights

Four Point Program
Four years, four transformative journeys—each designed to challenge students and promote independence. At Gould, learning happens everywhere, from the wilderness surrounding campus to across the globe.

Ski & Snowboard Building
Crafting their own snowboard or pair of skis has become a rite of passage at Gould. With a dedicated classroom equipped with a professional ski and snowboard press, students can create custom works of art they can take to their favorite trail at Sunday River.

Special Programs
Sea turtle conservation in Costa Rica, traveling the globe in search of winter for snow sports training, wilderness first aid, and outdoor adventure trips. If students are passionate about it, Gould offers it. Learning opportunities extend far beyond the classroom.

Service Learning
Students develop self-confidence and empathy through meaningful community service projects that strengthen communities.
