Gould Honors Students at Underclass Awards

Gould Honors Students with Academic Book Awards

Underclass Awards at Gould Academy celebrate students whose work, curiosity, leadership, and character have characterized them throughout the academic year. Department Book Awards are presented to students in each grade who demonstrate academic excellence within a subject area, while Scholar Shelf honors recognize students known for their curiosity and their role in creating inclusive learning environments. In addition to receiving recognition from their departments, Scholar Shelf recipients are honored with a permanently inscribed book added to the Sanborn Family Library collection.

Dean of Academics Ben Kamilewicz ’95 opened the evening by congratulating students for bringing their best selves to Gould every day.

“Tonight, we celebrate the life of the mind with our Underclass Awards. I am so proud of all you students who have given your best—day in and day out,” said Ben. “May you live with the courage and curiosity to continue these pursuits here and long after you have left for adventures beyond Gould.”

Ben went on to introduce the keynote speaker for the event, artist, Maine Adaptive Ski Coach, and Gould alumnus, Luke Paliocha ’10. Luke appealed to the Gould community to improve their own lives by helping others to feel like they belong through small acts.

Luke Paliocha speaks to the community at Underclass Awards

With one small selfless gesture, I believe that you’ll begin to understand your value as a steward of our planet. You’ll better understand the mutual respect every one of you here deserves within humanity. - Luke Paliocha ’10

“Let’s start with today,” implored Luke. “[Say to yourself] ‘I’m going to start my day by making the world a little more comfortable for the person next to me. And I’m going to allow that little gesture to determine my attitude for the rest of my day.’ With one small selfless gesture, I believe that you’ll begin to understand your value as a steward of our planet. You’ll better understand the mutual respect every one of you here deserves within humanity. But most important of all, you can be certain that you’ll be headed in the right direction on any journey you can imagine.”
