Two Gould Snowboarders Named to The U.S. Snowboard Team
The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team’s Snowboard Team nominations for the 2022-2023 season include an unprecedented two current Gould student-athletes, senior Tyler Hamel ’22 will continue his term joined by sophomore Brianna “Bri” Schnorrbusch ’24. Schnorrbusch is one of the latest additions to the U.S. Snowboard Team, announced on May 13 in Park City, Utah. Schnorrbush will join the U.S. Snowboard Development Group for Snowboardcross (SBX) and take the next step in what she hopes will be a bid for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina, Italy.
”I am super happy to have been named to the U.S. Team, especially at 16, but I have a lot more that I would like to accomplish,” says Schnorrbusch. “I’m beyond grateful for my family, friends, and coaches who have been there for me, especially Coach Yamada and Coach Gandee. I’m so stoked to be on a team with Olympic athletes that I’ve been watching for years.”
Schnorrbusch joined the Gould snowboard team last season as a ninth-grader where she trained and competed in regional USASA series competitions during a challenging season due to covid restrictions. As a 15-year-old rookie for the 2022 season, Bri competed in multiple FIS and North American Cup races, reaching the top step of the podium in consecutive races in Copper, CO in March to secure an overall 2nd place finish for the NorAm series and securing a personal spot for the 2023 World Cup. Schnorrbusch, along with teammates Hamel and Nathan Pare ’23, represented the United States at the FIS Junior World Championships in Veysonnaz, Switzerland where Bri placed 2nd against the best U20 athletes in the world. Bri joins her older sister, Ty Schnorrbusch on the U.S. Snowboard Team. Ty competes in slopestyle and is named to the U.S. Pro Team.“Bri has shown unbelievable grit, determination, and fearlessness this as a FIS rookie and truly earned this honor,” says Gould Snowboard Program Director KC Gandee
North American Cup Tour
A step below the World Cup Tour, the North American Cup Tour (NorAm) bridges the gap between national level and elite world-class level riding. The path to the World Cup and the Winter Olympics runs through it. Schnorrbusch and Hamel pounded the NorAm series this season in the U.S. and Canada with consistent performances and both ended the year strong at the NorAM finals to secure their spots with Tyler Hamel winning the North American Cup for men. Hamel is the first U20 male athlete to win the title since 2009 when future two-time Olympian Mick Dierdorff accomplished the feat.
“Having not one, but two current Gould student-athletes on the U.S. Snowboard Team is a testament not only to the hard work of both athletes, but also the dedication of their teammates, coaches, teachers, and of course Sunday River resort,” says Gould Snowboard Program Director KC Gandee.
Mikey Lacroix ’16 will take a break from the U.S. Snowboardcross B Team after two stressful pandemic years of travel and competition.
Up next for Hamel and Schnorrbusch are summer training camps with the U.S. Snowboard Team in Les Deux Alpes, France before the upcoming World Cup season.
