Gould Shares Love of Skiing on Martin Luther King Jr. Day at Mt. Abram
Gould celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day this year with a day of service focused on making communities more equitable, like those “Beloved Communities” that Dr. King dreamt of.
Part of that programming included 25 young members of the immigrant community in Lewiston learning to ski at Mt. Abram in Greenwood, Maine.

The Root Cellar, a support organization with sites in Portland and Lewiston, partnered with the Maine Immigrant and Refugee Services (MEIRS) to transport young people from the Lewiston area to Gould.
Gould students and the group from Root Cellar got to know each first with ice breakers and lunch in Ordway Hall. After lunch, they boarded the vans and headed to Mt. Abram.
Some of the kids had limited ski experience. For others, it was their first day on the slopes. They were matched by age and skill level with Gould students from the Rugrats program, which instructs local elementary students from Crescent Park Elementary School three times a week. A few Gould ski patrollers and several Gould faculty rounded out the group for good measure.
Everyone initially used the magic carpet to take a few easy turns and get acclimated, but Mt. Abram donated lift tickets to those who exhibited the skill to take on tougher terrain.

This was just one of the service learning projects that Gould students engaged in to honor the legacy of Dr. King. It was an impactful day for everyone involved.
