  • From Bumps and Rails to Off-Trail

Whether it is to compete for the first time or to make regular trips to the podium around the country, the Gould Academy Competition Program for Freestyle, Freeskiing and Freeride have dedicated coaches and training facilities to help student-athletes achieve their athletic and academic goals.
Our freestyle mogul skiers compete as US Ski and Snowboard members in regional and national competitions. Freeskiing competitors follow the USASA, Futures, and Revolution tours series, and any other event/rail jam we can find.

When it comes to Gould freeride skiers, it is all about finding turns in the woods, having some fun in the park, getting after powder days, and then putting all on those pieces together for the IFSA freeride tour events.

On the mountain at Sunday River, student-athletes benefit from a dedicated mogul course, airbag venue, and terrain parks, as well as Gould’s own on-mountain headquarters – the Kailey Competition Center.
Year-round training is tailored to each student-athlete and includes his or her off-season sport of choice including soccer, field hockey, mountain biking, lacrosse—even road cycling—supplemented with physical conditioning work in the Farnsworth Field House weight room and trampoline room.

Bumps and rails in the morning, labs and laptops in the afternoon. Student-athletes are strongly supported off the snow with dedicated teachers, faculty, and college counseling back on our traditional boarding school campus.

  • Head Freestyle Coach

JOHN KIMBLE

Coach Kimble has been Freestyle/Freeride skiing at Sunday River since the age of 6. After attending the University of Southern Maine, where he earned his athletic coaching certification, his passion for skiing led him to Lake Tahoe, CA, where he skied for the Atomic Freeride Team. He moved back to Maine in 2003 to be closer to his family, friends, and home mountain and has been coaching at Gould ever since. He has earned his ASEP, EMT, USASA Level II, USSA Level II Mogul, USSA Level III Aerials, and ISSA Strength and Conditioning and Youth Fitness certifications. He has chaired the USSA Eastern Freeskiing Division since 2010. When winter is over, you can still find Coach Kimble working with freestyle/freeride athletes in Gould’s fitness and trampoline training facilities, at the Lake Placid or Quebec training complexes, or on the Mount Hood glacier, coaching summer freestyle ski training camps. Mr. Kimble resides in Newry with his wife, Carrie, their son, Caleb, and daughter, Ellyn.
