  • In the Cold, a Community Responds: Gould Academy Faculty Lead Search & Rescue of Lost Teen in Grafton Notch

    In the remote, rugged expanse of Grafton Notch, where spring often arrives late and the deep snow can add an extra element of danger for even the most experienced outdoors enthusiast, a 17-year-old hiker found herself alone, disoriented, and in need of help.
    It was Sunday afternoon, April 27, when Chris Hayward, Director of Experiential Learning at Gould Academy — as well as the Director of Mahoosuc Mountain Search and Rescue — received the emergency call. A teenager from a nearby New Hampshire boarding school had lost the trail while hiking solo along the Grafton Loop. Cold, wet, and waist-deep in unmelted snow without snowshoes, she had the presence of mind to find cellular coverage in the midst of uneasy terrain & weather, to make a call to 9-1-1. She was uninjured but stranded.

    Gould Academy students & faculty kicked off this year’s Earth Day celebration with an inspiring visit from Gould Alumni, climate action leader and co-founder of Revision Energy, Phil Coupe ’86. A nationally recognized advocate for renewable energy and climate resilience, Phil addressed students and faculty in Bingham Hall Auditorium with a message that was both inspiring and empowering. He spoke about his life’s work transforming fossil fuel–based economies and societies into solar-powered, sustainable communities — and the responsibility that today’s young people have to shape an equitable future for all.

    A small group of Gould Academy ninth graders is currently immersed in the vibrant community of Santa María de Dota, Costa Rica, guided by faculty members Tracey Wilkerson and Adrian Lyne. This experience is part of Gould’s signature Ninth Grade Four Point program, with other student groups exploring Spain and Tanzania simultaneously.   • Local Effort, Global Impact: Students Volunteer at Partners for World Health

    As part of Sophomore Four Point, 10th graders spent a day volunteering with Partners for World Health (PWH). This organization improves health care and reduces environmental impact by collecting and redistributing surplus medical supplies.
    Through this hands-on service project, students saw how local efforts can make a global impact. Thank you to Elizabeth McLellan ’69, PWH’s founder and CEO, for leading this important work and making this experience possible!

  • Ninth Grade Four Point Students Arrive at Tumaini Senior Secondary in Tanzania

    One of Gould Academy’s Ninth Grade Four Point groups is in Tanzania for a weeklong journey of cultural exchange, service, and self-discovery. Their visit to Tumaini Senior Secondary (TSS) in Makuyuni took an unforgettable turn when four zebras casually wandered through campus, a remarkable welcome to their new environment.  

    Students were warmly greeted by their hosts and given a campus tour by Gould alumni Given Malyango ’24, offering a first glimpse into life at TSS. Embracing the opportunity to connect, they quickly engaged with their Tanzanian peers. A game of Uno, led by Zoe, sparked laughter and conversation, adding to the sense of camaraderie and adventure on their journey.

    According to trip leaders Brett Shifrin and Beth Garfield, the students are ready to embrace each experience as they learn about a new culture and broaden their view of the world.

  • Three Gould Juniors Earn National Ski Patrol Jackets at Sunday River

    This winter, three Gould Academy juniors—Clare Greene ’26, Brandon Philip ’26, and Brenna Fraser ’26—achieved a milestone that sets them apart in ski safety and rescue. Through Gould’s renowned Ski Patrol program, they completed hundreds of hours of training and testing with Sunday River’s professional patrol team, earning their official jackets as National Ski Patrol members before their senior year.

    The Gould Nordic Team continues their incredible streak, with athletes delivering standout performances across multiple competitions. The season's biggest news—Lucas Barstow ’25 has been selected to represent New England at Junior Nationals as one of only eight U18 skiers chosen for the event. Barstow will compete in Soldier Hollow, Utah, March 10-15, 2025.

  • Carter Willis Shares Her Passion for Zines in Her Senior Four Point Project

    Senior Four Point is an opportunity for twelfth-graders to draw from their collective Gould experiences and implement what they’ve learned into an independent project they are passionate about.

    For Carter Willis ’25, this meant enrolling in the Longfellow Young Writers’ Camp at the University of Maine Farmington and self-publishing her own zine, “A Peek Inside,” filled with original artwork and poetry.

  • Wellness Week at Gould: A Time for Fun, Connection, and Self-Discovery

    Gould Academy's Wellness Week kicked off with Winter Carnival on Monday, celebrating the season and our place in the world. The faculty pumped everyone up with an inflatable costume parade to kick things off and despite the brutal cold, Advisory “Notch” Groups embraced the spirit of the day with fat bike races, sledding, soccer, and a good old-fashioned tug-of-war. There were plenty of opportunities to warm up with snacks and hot chocolate, and the fun continued into the night with a student-organized Rail Jam for freestyle skiers and snowboarders. Thanks to Max Hanson ’25 and Coach Damian Dryjas ’11, for organizing such a successful event.

    Gould Students Celebrate the History of Baseball in Japan with Red Sox Outfielder Masataka Yoshida at USM

    Four Gould students, along with several faculty members, enjoyed a unique opportunity to learn about Maine’s remarkable connection to the history of Baseball in Japan while reconnecting with a Gould alumnus.

    The commencement of the Horace Wilson Project at the University of Southern Maine celebrated the Gorham, Maine native who introduced baseball to Japan in the 1870s. A panel discussion featured retired baseball great Ralph Bryant and Boston Red Sox outfielder Masataka Yoshida, who was joined by his interpreter, Yutaro Yamaguchi, a 2016 graduate of Gould.

    Today, the Gould community came together to honor the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. with a day of reflection and learning. A highlight of the day was an assembly led by DEIB Coordinator and Academic Skills teacher Julia Tatsch and Director of Admissions Elisa Lellios, who spoke about the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. and the possibilities of his dream. They invited the community to reflect on how the actions of those who came before us influence our lives today and how we, in turn, can shape a more just and equitable future here at Gould and beyond.

    The Formula for Success: How Gould’s Math Talent Ranks Among the Nation’s Best

    Gould Academy students Richard Chen ’26 and Bruce Qiu ’27 have achieved a significant milestone in high school mathematics by qualifying for the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME). This places them among the top high school math students in the country and reflects their dedication to learning beyond the classroom.

    The path to qualifying for the AIME begins with the American Mathematics Competition (AMC), a highly challenging test designed for advanced math students. Achieving a top score on the AMC and qualifying for the AIME is rare. Ajay Zutshi, their math teacher and advisor, likened the accomplishment to scoring a perfect 1600 on the SAT in terms of its rarity and prestige.
