A Brighter Future: Roster of Named Scholarships Continues to Grow

Each year the future gets a little bit brighter for each of the students chosen as recipients of a Gould scholarship. In any given year, over twenty of these endowed scholarships are presented to deserving students.
For the donors, it means an opportunity to memorialize a loved one, secure their legacy in the context of a worthy cause, or give back to an institution that provides the academic and social foundation for success. Many of the scholarships have a very specific purpose, supporting students from particular regions or whose interests and abilities matches specific criteria.
Just this year, two new scholarships were formed, bringing the total to 24 scholarships, worth over $16,000 in annual tuition assistance.

One of those new scholarships was given by Dick and Wendy Penley. Each year a student from Oxford County will be named a “Penley Scholar” and receive financial assistance towards their tuition thanks to the Penley’s magnanimous gift.

In a letter signed by both Dick and Wendy Penley, they described their reason for creating the scholarship. "We believe in the power of private schools such as Gould to transform teenagers’ lives – especially in this global economy. There are many Maine kids who would not have the opportunity to experience such change without financial assistance. They deserve it – and the future of our world depends on it."

David Lombard '61 created the David F. and Susan D. Lombard scholarship in 1995,  on the occasion of his 35th class reunion.
Lombard explained why he chose to invest in Gould students. "During these three years in Bethel, I was the beneficiary of financial aid from the town of Kennebunkport. It was my goal to provide a scholarship to a boy or a girl from one of the three Northern New England states so that the recipient would have the same opportunity I had to build a solid educational foundation for future success in life."

At Lombard's 45th reunion, the idea for a new scholarship came about during a conversation with his classmates at a Sunday morning brunch. He recalls, "It had been an extraordinary weekend with old classmates renewing former friendships, and reaffirming the importance of Gould's role in each of our lives. Our discussion then took a natural progression to the idea of establishing a legacy of scholarship assistance to future Gould students in the name of our class. Our original goals were modest, but it soon became clear that $100,000 was a realistic target.”
