Celebrating Academic Excellence and Character: Gould Academy’s 2025 Underclass Awards

In the final days of school, the Gould Academy community gathered in Bingham Auditorium to celebrate the intellectual curiosity, academic achievement, and character of its underclass students during the 2025 Underclass Awards.
The evening began with welcoming remarks from Associate Head of School Ben Kamilewicz ’95, who reflected on the year’s academic journey and encouraged students to continue their pursuit of learning with courage and curiosity. He introduced the keynote speaker, Meghan Costello ’11—Gould alumna, alpine ski coach, and Triple Crown hiker. Through stories of adventure, coaching, and professional exploration, Costello inspired students to embrace the unexpected, follow their passions, and live with purpose.

Through personal stories from her time on trail, Meghan shared the lessons she’s learned while hiking thousands of miles across the country. As one of the few to complete the Triple Crown of Hiking—thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, and Continental Divide Trail—she spoke candidly about the physical and mental challenges of long-distance hiking, the value of solitude, and the joy of moving slowly through the world. Her reflections highlighted the courage to say “yes” to adventure and the growth from stepping into the unknown. She encouraged students to see their time at Gould not just as preparation, but as the beginning of a life filled with exploration, purpose, and continual learning.

Following her remarks, department chairs and faculty took the stage to present Book Awards and Scholarshelf recognitions across disciplines.
