Artur Savchii ’24—Math Olympian Hopes to One Day Help Rebuild Ukraine
Artur Savchii ’24 has done something unprecedented at Gould. He qualified for the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME) based on his score on the American Mathematics Contest 12 (AMC 12). In this next phase of testing, Artur can qualify for The United States of America Mathematical Olympiad, which precedes the International Mathematics Olympiad. To put this in perspective, currently, Artur is one of the top 3,000 math students in the country, and that's just the beginning of his accomplishments.
“This is a huge deal,” says Gould Math Team coach and Math Teacher Ajay Zutshi. “It’s the equivalent of qualifying for the Junior Olympic trials. He's in the top 0.02% of all high school students in the United States. In the last 21 years, no Gould student has made it this far. It may be the first AIME qualifier ever.”
Always humble, Artur isn’t one to boast. “I was pleasantly surprised to learn that I advanced to the AIEM,” he says. “I had some doubts about how well I performed on the AMC. Nevertheless, I'm excited about the opportunity to continue in the competition.”
The good news for Artur, a Ukrainian Global Scholar, doesn’t stop there. Recently, Artur received the remarkable news that he will be attending the highly selective NYU Abu-Dhabi. Only the top 4% of applicants gain acceptance, and it was Artur’s top choice from the start of his career at Gould. In addition to being accepted, he also learned that he received a full four-year scholarship from the university.
Co-director of College Counseling Maggie Davis is equally impressed with Artur.
“Artur is off the charts with his strong work ethic, genuine kindness, and a remarkable sense of responsibility,” said Ms. Davis. “His commitment to not only achieving personal goals but also ensuring his actions have a positive impact on others is astounding. His resilience, focus, and authenticity humble and inspire me.”
Making a positive impact is exactly what Artur intends to do beyond his college career. Six months before arriving at Gould, the Russo-Ukrainian War broke out, which devasted his country, displacing millions. Being selected as a Ukrainian Global Scholar allowed Artur to attend Gould initially. In exchange for his scholarship, he has committed to five years of service to his home country to help rebuild and give back.
Five years is what he committed to, but Artur’s plans exceed even that.
“Ukraine holds a special place in my heart, and I am excited to play a role in its rebuilding,” says Artur. “From the beginning of my journey, my goal has been to get a Western education and then return to Ukraine. I am eager to contribute to Ukraine, not just for five years but for my whole life. It's the only place I see myself in the future.”
