Liu ’24 and Hu ’24 Earn Inaugural Moxie Awards

The Moxie Award, presented by Head of School Tao Smith, celebrates Gould students who demonstrate an act of creativity, courage, or kindness, three of our school’s four core values.

Moxie is Maine's official state soft drink and has a rich history. Originally created in Maine as a tonic by a doctor and philanthropist, it predates popular sodas like Dr. Pepper and Coca-Cola. While not as widely consumed today, the name of the drink inspired the term "moxie," which signifies “force of character, determination, or nerve.”

In the announcement of the award in December during a school assembly, celebrity skier Donny Pelletier, a Moxie enthusiast, emphasized the award's significance and encouraged community members to nominate deserving candidates to Mr. Smith.

Today, we're thrilled to announce the first two Moxie Award recipients: Gavin Liu ’24 and Jerry Hu ’24. They stood out among the many nominees for their warm welcome and generous assistance to a new Gould student.

“We’re honored to receive the first Moxie Award,” says Jerry Hu, ”but it tastes like traditional Chinese herb medicine,” he added with a look of disgust.

Way to go, Huskies! Let’s join Donny Pelletier and the rest of our community to continue celebrating the “moxie” that makes our Gould community shine!
